UNDER THE TREE

Closed December 19, 2015

Somewhere in America, as the holiday season reaches its zenith, a familiar scene unfolds; but the shadows in the corner are growing longer.

Join a cast of odd, yet familiar, characters in a disjointed and darkly comic exploration of American holiday ritual.

A devised work, Under The Tree weaves physical theatre with puppetry and a healthy amount of educational exposition about the history of our traditions.

Explore the roots of our holiday rituals as you take a trip, Under The Tree.

COLLABORATORS

the artists behind the show

Ian Bivins

co-director . performer . designer

"I am excited to be bringing my diverse theatrical skill set to Under the Tree. From scenic design to the creative flow of dancing with a Christmas tree, it's a great opportunity to work multi-dimensionally."

As a Theatre Artist, Ian is interested in bringing new collaborative ideas to the performer’s process and transforming the traditional approach to theatre education. He is a certified Margolis Method faculty member and has taught professionally in New York, Bellingham, and abroad. He has also performed internationally with MB Adaptors.

He has performed locally with the iDiOM Theater, Northwest Passage Theatre Lab, and Kuntz and Company. As a producer, Ian has created work with the Lummi Nation. He has taught and directed at Bellingham Arts Academy for Youth (BAAY), as well as creating scenic designs for several of BAAY’s shows, including PIPPIN! and Bullshot Crummond.

Angela Kiser

co-director . performer . designer

"We have been ruminating on this show for over a year now and can't wait to share this original work. We're collaborating with some pretty remarkable artists and I'm stoked to be making our devised theatre debut at the iDiOM Theater."

As a professional designer and performer, Angela is a firm believer in using the arts and technology to deepen the relationships within our community. For over a decade, she has devoted her time to constructing unique approaches to storytelling and performance. She also has extensive training and professional experience in lighting, sound, and audio/visual setup.

Angela has been a principal collaborating artist of dance/theatre group, Kuntz and Company, since 2008. She is a certifying faculty member of Margolis Method and an MB ADAPTORS international ensemble member. She's been a performer and technical director with several other northwest art groups such as Bellingham TheatreWorks, iDiOM Theater, Setting Sun Productions, Little Bird Theatre, and Bellingham Repertory Dance.

Fish Lopez

performer . designer

"I am totally juiced to be a part of this show!  From the initial ramblings of why he hates Christmas, to the surprising revelations of why he loves Christmas, this exploration has been a helluva treat.  Also, the opportunity to bare the teeth of the Long Night and its denizens is never something to be passed up."

Fish has been in and out of theatrical performance and production for just about as long as he can remember.  As life goes on, he has decided that is the better place to be.

Brendan LaBotz

musical composer . live musician

"Under the Tree is a great chance for me to try out some new techniques in live audio manipulation and a wonderful opportunity to work with some great folks."

Brendan loves lending his musical talents to different projects. He has written original compositions for theater, film, dance performances and video games. He has collaborated with the Idiom Theater, Northwest Passage Theatre Lab, Make.Shift Art Space, the Bellingham Circus Guild, and the Bellingham Repertory Dance Company by doing live scoring, sound design, and musical composition. Brendan’s style of music varies greatly from project to project. From kinetic, electronic dance music to atmospheric background music to an all-out rock opera, Brendan is very versatile. Brendan has been composing electronic music for over ten years. He is also a regular performer around town in various bands as a bassist and keyboardist.

Juliette Machado

multi-media designer

"I am so grateful to be included in the Under the Tree process, and figure that designing creepy holiday projections is probably a one-time opportunity."

Juliette is a local dancer, filmmaker, photographer, and arts administrator. She spends her time working at Bellingham Arts Academy for Youth (BAAY), at the Pickford Film Center, for her own photo/video business (JM Works), and rehearsing with Bellingham Repertory Dance. Juliette received her BFA in Dance and BA in Communication Studies from WWU, and has since loved collaborating with other arts organizations such as Kuntz and Company, Skagit Opera, Harper & I Dance Center, OTP, and Mindport Museum. She also loves listing things. And pie.

Christian Anne Smith

set / costume / mixed media designer

"From the very first description of the sets, the dark creepy Krampus-like character, the exploration of Christmas's dark past and present, I felt my building fingers a-twitching! I am an artist who loves to feel the whole range of light to dark in my work. The chance to collaborate with this creative crew is very exciting to me."

Christian Anne Smith studied illustration at Parson’s School of Design, NYC and has a B.A. in Studio Arts from Western Washington University . Christian currently lives in Bellingham , Washington where she paints and teaches. She is a member of the Waterfront Artist’s Collective and is involved in various projects throughout the community that mix art and people.
